What a Wonderful World-Louis Armstrong

Hi!
I have been too busy to add anything to the page due to exams! Marking is done. Today I will share an oldie but goodie with you all. This classic song is great for lower level students.
I also have a very low prep lesson for you. Bring in large chart paper and lots of coloured markers. you will need enough sets of markers for each group of 3 or 4 in the class.

1. Play the video or the recording of the song. Tell students to just listen the first time.
2. Next, hand out one piece of chart paper and a set or two of markers to each group.
3. Tell them you will play the song twice and they have to draw what they hear. It is supposed to be fun and creative. If they are very low level, let them read the lyrics on the third listen and finish up their art.
4. They can then share their drawings with the group.
I have done this with many different groups and it has always been a hit.

What a Wonderful World Lyrics
I see trees of green........ red roses too
I see em bloom..... for me and for you
And I think to myself.... what a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue..... clouds of white
Bright blessed days....dark sacred nights
And I think to myself .....what a wonderful world.

The colors of a rainbow.....so pretty ..in the sky
Are also on the faces.....of people ..going by
I see friends shaking hands.....sayin.. how do you do
They're really sayin......i love you.

I hear babies cry...... I watch them grow
They'll learn much more.....than I'll never know
And I think to myself .....what a wonderful world

(instrumental break)

The colors of a rainbow.....so pretty ..in the sky
Are there on the faces.....of people ..going by
I see friends shaking hands.....sayin.. how do you do
They're really sayin...*spoken*(I ....love....you).

I hear babies cry...... I watch them grow
*spoken*(you know their gonna learn
A whole lot more than I'll never know)
And I think to myself .....what a wonderful world
Yes I think to myself .......what a wonderful world.

Level Intermediate and higher.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uetJoJj0M88

  1. Hand out the incorrect lyrics (print the PDF).
  2. Tell the learners to listen for errors in the lyrics you have given them.
  3. Take up the activity using the real lyrics.
  4. Discuss the use of the Present Perfect Progressive in the song. He has been waiting a long time. What has he been doing? Why this tense?

The Third Conditional using an Adele song

Hi!
I love using music when I teach grammar in my ESL classes.
I have made some simple activities that I would like to share.
Let's get started with an activity I made just this week!
Adele-If it hadn't been for love...

My first lesson is for THE THIRD CONDITIONAL.
It uses an Adele song called "If it hadn't been for love..", a bluesy song with a great rhythm.

Procedure

Print the Lyrics https://www.lyricsfreak.com/a/adele/if+it+hadnt+been+for+love_20910341.html
And  cut up the lyrics into strips.Make enough for each group.
1. Put into groups of 3 or 4.
2. Listen once without the lyrics.
3. Listen with lyrics.
4. Give out the cut up strips of the lyrics
5. Have them listen and put the song lyrics in the correct order.

Follow up with vocabulary and story explanations.
  • What did she do for love?
  • parole, 44, four walls, jailhouse, hitchhike....

Explain the use of "woulda" as a informal pronunciation of "would have".
Explain the idea of regret and how we can use  the third conditional  for that.
